Carl Lohren - Innovative Methods of Golf Instruction

by Alan Hunter

Carl Lohren Master PGA

Over a fifty year career of successful professional competition and teaching, Carl Lohren has become best known for his innovative methods of golf instruction. Carl played college golf at the University of Maryland, finishing 2nd individually in the 1958 NCAA National Championship and leading the team to a 3rd place finish. His amateur career also included a Mid-Atlantic Amateur Title, a runner-up finish in the Eastern Amateur, four U.S. Amateur appearances and a U.S. Open appearance.

After turning professional in 1961, Carl ‘s early rounds on the PGA Tour convinced him that he needed to find a better way to compete under tournament pressure. He then began his career as a PGA club professional, working on his game and studying the best ball strikers on the PGA Tour. It was Ben Hogan who opened Carl’s eyes at Oakland Hills in the 1964 Carling Open. To play a 150 yard shot, Hogan selected an 8-iron and took a short, little swing. Carl could not imagine Ben making the shot, but to his surprise, Hogan’s ball exploded off the clubface and wound up ten feet from the pin.

After that event, Carl continued to study Hogan and hit thousands of balls trying to replicate Hogan’s swing. Finally, in 1966, Carl made a breakthrough. He had tried countless ways of taking the club back, but had never started his swing by turning the left shoulder. Immediately upon doing so, Carl’s ball flight took on a different look: it had a piercing trajectory, with plenty of carry and roll. Carl continued to refine his method, so that in 1968, he won the NY State PGA Championship in a playoff over former Ryder Cup player Bill Collins. After that breakthrough victory, Carl continued to excel as a tournament player, winning more professional tournaments, qualifying for the Champions Tour, playing in 11 Major Championships, 15 PGA Tour events, and International Tours all over the world.

Since he began sharing his method with other players, Carl has won national awards from Golf Digest and Golf Magazine for being one of the nation’s top golf instructors. He has also authored two instructional books: One Move to Better Golf and Getting Set for Golf. Carl’s photo has graced the cover of Golf Digest and he has been featured in Golf Magazine, Sports Illustrated and on the Golf Channel. Carl has also taught and received endorsements from such top PGA Tour players as Lee Trevino, Gary Player, Deane Beman, Chi Chi Rodriguez, Babe Hiskey, Fred Funk and many other top professionals (see endorsements page). Carl accomplished all this while fulfilling his responsibilities as the Head Golf Professional at North Shore Country Club on Long Island, NY, for 30 years.
