Checked Baggage On US Airways

 

Pay for your 1st and 2nd checked bags when you check in online or at the airport. All bag fees are non-refundable, per person and each way.

 

 

If you bought your ticket before February 1, 2011 or are traveling before March 1, 2011

We'll charge $100 per bag for your 3rd - 9th checked bags

If you bought your ticket before October 1, 2010

1st checked bag is $23 online and $25 at the airport and 2nd checked bag is $32 online and $35 at the airport. All bag fees are non-refundable, per person and each way. We charge $100 per bag for your 3rd - 9th bag. Overweight/oversize rules still apply.

  • All Dividend Miles Preferred members
  • Confirmed First Class and Envoy passengers
  • Unaccompanied minors (with US Airways unaccompanied minor paid assistance)
  • Star Alliance Silver and Gold status members
  • Passengers traveling to/from the Middle East or South America
  • Active U.S. military personnel with ID (1st through 3rd bag up to 100 lbs/45 kg each free of charge)

You're also allowed:

  • Required mobility assistive devices, such as wheelchairs, canes or crutches (to check or carry on)
  • Infant assistive device (stroller or car seat)
  • Required medical supplies or equipment. These items may also be carried on to the aircraft, as long as they meet size and weight restrictions. If the medical supplies or equipment are included in a larger bag containing other non-essential items, that bag will not be considered a free item, and will be subject to normal baggage fees

Traveling with an infant?

You're allowed:

  • 1 checked bag with maximum total dimensions of 45 in/114 cm and maximum weight of 50 lbs/23 kg (checked bag fees apply)
  • 1 fully collapsible stroller or 1 child restraint device or car seat (no charge)

For bags that weigh 71-100 lbs/33-45 kg

Oversize checked bags

+ $175 each
Dimensions between 62 – 80 in/157 – 203 cm

There is a $125 fee per bag for checked bags 3-9.

Flights to/from Europe and Israel

Overweight checked bags

+ $150 each
For bags that weigh 51-70 lbs/23-32 kg in Economy
(no overweight charge if you’re booked in Envoy for first 2 bags)

+ $175 each
For bags that weigh 71-100 lbs/33-45 kg

Oversize checked bags

+ $175 each
Dimensions between 62 – 80 in/157 – 203 cm

There is a $200 fee per bag for checked bags 3-9.

On top of our checked bag fees, we charge:

  • $50 extra for bags that weigh between 51-70 lbs (23-32 kg) if you're in Coach or Economy
  • $100 extra for bags that weigh between 71- 100 lbs (32-45 kg)
  • $100 extra for bags larger than 62 in/157 cm (we will not accept bags over 80 in/203 cm)
  • If you're traveling to/from Brazil, you're allowed 2 checked bags up to 70 lbs (32 kg) free of charge
  • If you're traveling in First or Envoy, you're allowed 2 checked bags up to 70 lbs (32 kg) free of charge

Carry-on bags

Size requirements

You're allowed one carry-on bag and one personal item. Personal items include a purse, briefcase or laptop bag.

  • Up to 45 in/115 cm (14 x 9 x 22 in or 36 x 23 x 56 cm)
  • Up to 40 lbs/18 kg

Carry-on rules for US Airways Express

Not sure if you’re on a US Airways Express flight? Please check your confirmation. If you're on a flight operated by Air Wisconsin, Colgan, Piedmont, PSA or Trans States, you’re allowed to carry on 2 items.

  • 1 personal item (such as a purse or laptop) in the cabin and;
  • 1 small carry-on bag. Your carry-on bag will be tagged, placed in the cargo bin and returned plane-side or in the jetway when you arrive.

Baggage liability

Liability for loss, delay or damage to checked baggage is limited to $3,300 per ticketed passenger for travel entirely within the U.S.

When US Airways has exercised the ordinary standard of care, it shall not be liable for damage to or damage caused by fragile articles, liquids, or perishables, nor for the loss of, damage to, or delay in:

  • Antiques/heirlooms/collectibles
  • Blueprints
  • Business samples, equipment, documents & irreplaceable items
  • Currency
  • Equipment
  • Keys
  • Natural fur products
  • Optics
  • Precious metals and stones
  • Sound reproduction equipment
  • Artwork
  • Books, manuscripts, publications
  • Computer hardware, software, etc.
  • Electronics
  • Lifesaving medication
  • Negotiable papers, securities, documents
  • Photographic, cinematographic audio/video equipment
  • Silverware
  • Spirits

International baggage liability policy

For international travel (including the domestic portions of international flights) to which the Montreal Convention applies, US Airways' liability for loss, delays, or damage to baggage is limited to approximately $1,807 per passenger for checked and unchecked baggage.

Local airport/government regulations state that any baggage over 70 pounds is not accepted for travel from: MAN, LGW, GLA, LIS, MXP, ARN, BRU, LHR, SNN, DUB.

Baggage embargo

There is a seasonal baggage embargo for 'southbound passengers.'

  • Guadalajara
  • Mexico City
  • Santo Domingo

During the embargo, passengers are only allowed to check in two bags - no excess baggage. Also passengers are not allowed to check in boxes. Normal 1st and 2nd bag fees apply.

Normal bag allowances for First Class, Dividend Miles Preferred, Star Gold and Silver passengers remain unchanged during the embargo. Non-revs passengers are allowed only carry-on and no checked bags.

Baggage embargo dates:

  • Easter week (Friday prior to Good Friday until the Wednesday after Easter)
  • November 15 - January 13, 2011
